Maghaberry Prisoners Protest
A dirty protest
has been going on for many months in Maghaberry Prison,
Co. Antrim, by Republican prisoners over the issues of
forced strip searches and restricted controlled
movement. The POWs were forced into this action because
the The Northern Ireland Prison Service
has reneged on an agreement signed by all parties
last August.
The agreement
stated that controlled movement was to be phased out.
This has not happened. Degrading forced strip searches
were to be replaced by the “boss chair,” which is an
electronic scanning device. This has not happened,
either.
It would be a
tragedy if this protest escalated to a hunger strike.
