Sue Miskill Kramer

Recipient of the 2015 Sr. Sarah Clarke Award

Sue was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the granddaughter of Francis (Frank) Miskill whom of Irish heritage, relocated in East Windsor Connecticut and farmed tobacco with his family. As a wee child Sue’s parents and grandfather moved to the Wethersfield Connecticut area.

Sue has always felt a strong connection with the hunger strikers via her Irish roots and idolized Bobby Sands and his comrades.  Due to this connection, she became active in Irish republicanism - from attending protests at the British and Lithuanian Consulates to organizing fundraisers and commemorative events on behalf of incarcerated Irish republicans.

Sue has maintained an active letter writing campaign on behalf of Irish republican prisoners of war. In 2012 she traveled to the occupied six counties, staying in the home of a former Irish POW and his family. During this immersion trip, she visited HM Maghaberry Prison and was able to meet with current Irish POWS that she had developed relationships with through writing and supporting their families. While on her trip she had the honor of meeting the family of a Bloody Sunday victim.

While there, she was honored for her activism by the POW families and given a celtic cross that was made in Maghaberry Prison. She also attended protests in Belfast for Marian Price and marched in the International Women’s Day Parade with other Irish republicans along with attending community strategy meetings at Conway Mill in Belfast.

Stateside she has worked closely with the Freedom for All Ireland Committee out of Waterbury, CT.  Along with her colleagues, they continue to be instrumental in educating Irish Americans as to the current plight of Irish republican POWS through holding commemorative events such as Bloody Sunday, Easter Rising, and hunger strike honorariums; along with annual fundraisers for the families of incarcerated Irish republican political hostages.

Sue continues to be passionate about the Irish republican cause and support of prisoners and families in the occupied six and has developed many close relationships with the families.
