Gas was found off the Mayo coast some nine years ago by Shell
Oil. Their plan was to land the gas on the beach at Broadhaven
and pipe it 5 miles inland for processing throughout the peat
bog of Erris. The pipeline, if allowed to proceed, will run
through farmland, conservation areas and estuaries of rare
plants and animal species in the area. Opposition to the routing
of the pipeline and the location of processing facilities has
delayed the project on numerous occasions to the chagrin of
Shell and the Irish government.
